The History of Trent Hills Canadian Tire

During the 1940′s, Mason Brothers’ Service Station, located on Market Street, across the road from where Sharpe’s Market is currently located, sold Canadian Tire products.

Past and Present Stewardship - The long and proud 60-year history of the Canadian Tire operation in Campbellford was well represented on the occasion of the grand opening of the new, streamlined outlet on Grand Road. Former Canadian Tire operator Wayne Gunter, who presided over the former store at 65 Bridge., and his wife Joyce, offer their congratulations to current owners Steve McCarthy and his wife Cathie. In 1951, the Canadian Tire Associate Store opened at the corner of Bridge Street and Doxsee Avenue under the ownership of Havelock Boulter and later William R. Dawson. It boasted a retail sales area with many products as well as a complete automotive service department. The business continued to expand, eventually taking over the former Masterson’s Meat Market and the Northumberland Health Unit buildings.

When Bill Dawson left Campbellford to take over the larger Sudbury store, Wayne Gunter, a former employee, purchased the business. In 1965, Wayne left for Elliot Lake to expand his horizons and the firm changed hands several times before Wayne returned in 1967. Wayne sold the business to John Gabriel in December 1990, and John Gabriel in turn sold it to Mark Caldwell.

Steven McCarthy became the Associate Dealer of the Campbellford store in 1996. Since that time, Steven and his team have taken a 4000 sq. ft retail store to over 33,000 square ft. Today Trent Hills enjoys the selection, service and value that only a modern and spacious retail store can provide. Open seven days a week, six for automotive repair, Trent Hills Canadian Tire allows you the unique experience of shopping under the same roof while your automobile is being serviced or repaired.
